Cocaine (cocaine hydrochloride) or coke is one of the most popular drugs in the world. It gives you a huge ego boost: energy, talking points and self-esteem for two. No wonder that a lot of celebrities, finance figures and politicians adore it. You are also able to function reasonably well on it. It has become fairly normalized in the Netherlands. The tricky thing is that it can be quite addictive. Even when you think you have it all under control, you quickly feel the need to take a sniff every time you have a drink. That is why experts refer to it as a ‘sniper’.

Coke is a crystalline powder that is mostly snorted. It tastes somewhat bitter, and it can numb your nose and palate. It comes from the leaves of the coca plant, which grows mainly in South America. Because it is illegal almost everywhere in the world, and has to be smuggled across many national borders, it is a dirty and goten bloody affair. So don’t expect any fair trade cocaine, because it doesn’t exist. For High Human Christophurus Elfez, coke has a social effect: ‘If you feel a little uncomfortable with someone, a glass of wine or a line of coke helps. Introverts become more outgoing, so for me, it removes a certain emotional barrier.’

Cocaine is ranked number 5 out of 20 in Professor David Nutt’s drug harm index. So it’s not all that innocent. Yet drugs are never without risk. For more information about this, we would like to refer you to Jellinek, where you can read more about: effects/ risks/ addiction.
